IRS Representation

When the IRS calls, we answer.

Audit representation, notice response, installment agreements, offers in compromise, and penalty abatement. Circular 230-credentialed representation — we handle the IRS so you don't have to.

Overview

What to do when a letter from the IRS shows up.

Getting an IRS letter is designed to produce panic. It almost always works. But the actual response is usually much less dire than the letter suggests — provided you respond correctly and on time. Ignore it or respond wrong, and a $2,000 issue becomes a $15,000 issue. Respond correctly, and most notices resolve in 30–60 days with minimal damage.

Our IRS representation practice covers the full spectrum: CP2000 automated correspondence audits (the most common), field audits by IRS revenue agents, collection actions (wage garnishment, bank levies, tax liens), installment agreements, offers in compromise (settling for less than owed), and penalty abatement requests. We don't do tax court litigation — for that, we refer to a tax attorney we trust.

First step if you've received a notice: don't panic, don't call the IRS yourself, and don't miss the response deadline. Book a 30-minute consultation (free for clients, $150 for non-clients, credited to the engagement if we proceed). We'll read the notice, tell you what it means, and recommend next steps. Most of the time, the answer is simpler than the letter makes it sound.

What's Included

Full-scope representation for every IRS matter.

Whether you received a simple computer-generated notice or a field auditor is calling your office, the scope of representation is the same: we handle it.

Notice analysis & response

We read every IRS letter against the actual return, identify whether the IRS is correct, and draft the response. Most notices resolve at this stage.

Audit defense

Correspondence and office audits handled end-to-end. Document preparation, witness interviews, and direct IRS communication by a credentialed representative.

Collections relief

Installment agreements (standard and streamlined), currently-not-collectible status, innocent spouse relief, and offers in compromise.

Penalty abatement

First-time abatement, reasonable-cause abatement, and statutory exception requests. We know which arguments work with which types of penalties.

Lien & levy release

Tax lien withdrawal, subordination, and discharge. Bank levy and wage garnishment release when financial circumstances justify it.

Back-filing

Unfiled returns going back 6+ years. We reconstruct the data, file in proper order, and negotiate penalties down before they spiral.

State & local representation

Florida Department of Revenue, state income tax matters, and multi-state collections coordinated alongside federal work.

Transcript analysis

We pull your IRS transcripts, read the account history, and identify exactly what's owed, what's in dispute, and what options exist.

FAQ

Common questions about IRS representation.

I got a scary letter. What do I do first?
Three things: (1) Don't ignore it — IRS notices have hard deadlines, usually 30 or 60 days. (2) Don't call the IRS yourself — you'll likely hurt your position. (3) Book a consultation immediately (same-day availability for urgent matters). We'll read the notice and tell you what it actually means before you take any action.
How do I know if I actually owe the IRS what they say I do?
You often don't. IRS automated systems generate CP2000 notices based on data matching — and they're wrong about 30% of the time. Common errors: basis not reported for stock sales, 1099 issued for non-income amounts, incorrect identity matching. We pull your transcripts, compare against the return, and tell you whether the IRS is right.
Can I just call the IRS and work it out myself?
You can, but it's risky. The IRS rep on the phone isn't working for you — they're documenting everything you say, and casual statements can waive rights or lock in positions that hurt you. With a CPA representative, you have someone whose only job is protecting your interests, and who speaks the IRS's language.
What's an offer in compromise?
An OIC is an IRS-approved settlement for less than the full amount owed. The IRS accepts them when there's genuine doubt about collectibility or liability. Success rate is ~40% of accepted offers — most fail because the application was poorly prepared. We only file OICs when the math actually works; if it won't, we'll tell you and recommend an installment plan instead.
Can you represent me if you didn't prepare the original return?
Yes. Most representation clients come to us with returns prepared by someone else — sometimes the issue is that the original preparer made errors. We can represent you regardless of who prepared the return.

Don't face the IRS alone.
